The following is a list of recent changes and improvements made to iEventMonitor. Most changes are made as the direct result of a customer request. If you have changes you would like to see made to iEventMonitor, E-mail us and we'll add your change to our list of possible implementations.

Release 8.0

  • 8.00:
    • New enterprise license for multi-LPAR environments, with centralized reporting and management.
    • More granular control over configuration of SSL monitor.
    • Expanded capabilities in job watch monitor.

Release 7.0

  • 7.10
    • The iEventMonitor Activity Log has been simplified so that there will only be a single record in the log for each alertable event. Prior to this change, if the alert was sent to multiple notification addresses, one record for each address was created.
    • A new audit monitor option lets you track secure socket connections
    • New start and stop commands have been added to let you start and stop specific tasks without affecting their status on the list of tasks. Previous to this, if you wanted to stop a specific task, it was removed from the list of tasks used in iEventMonitor on your system. The individual task ending commands that were previously included on the menus are still available as commands.
    • The WATCH menus have been streamlined and there are now just two of them rather than the earlier three menus.
  • 7.06
    • New commands to end and start individual tasks that don't remove those tasks from the list of tasks being used.
    • Updated and simplified WATCH menus

  • 7.05
    • An edit for the message queue monitor has been corrected in the green screen interface to allow for the *ROUTE option to be used on a message queue monitor entry.
    • When entering the *ROUTE option, error checking has been updated to enforce the upper case storage for the option.
    • The FNDJRN command (option 4 on the AUDIT menu) has been updated to allow the use of new audit codes recently added to the product.
    • Remote diagnostics have been improved.

  • 7.04: Includes several minor fixes and a new option for the SK (secure socket) monitor. The software can now alert for SK rejections only.

  • 7.03: Update includes these minor changes:
    • Menu option 4, used to maintain message routing, was failing unless the IEMLIB library was added to the job's library list.
    • On some systems, when starting all IEM tasks, the process could throw an error message due to a lock on a control area within the product. This has been fixed.

  • 7.02: Update includes these minor changes:
    • Corrected a missing file reference in SSL certificate watch.
    • Resolved logging format issue in the certificate watch
    • Updated some page titles in Bluescape web UI
    • Corrected the *TIME opion in job watch
    • Improved SMS text formatting for messages passing through kConnect (Twilio)

  • 7.00: Added support for native SMS messaging and new watches for thread wait, SSL expiration and user profile expiration. The audit journal monitor function now support SK (secure sockets connections) tracking. Purge file automation is now supported. An optional web UI called Bluescape is available for full web admin capability.

Release 6:

  • 6.07: A Watch feature has been added to check for jobs that are stuck in Thread Wait (THDW) status.
  • 6.06: New email options have been added and can be accessed by customers with IBM i OS 7.3 or later installed. The new options let customer select which outbound email protocol to use. If you switch to use the IBM i OS option, there is a new option to use HTML encoding for email body text.
  • The Output Queue Watch has been enhanced to allow for a watch number of up to 123,327 files. The spool file threshold setting will also now appear in the alert text.
  • The Activity Log Purge process has been enhanced to allow either the entry of a purge date or a number of days for purge.
  • Escalation option added for reminder alerts on a message queue monitor when a response is needed but has not yet been provided.
  • Watch added for messages in the System History Log
  • Suppression of duplicate alerts added for the message queue monitor to reduce email traffic in the event of an application loop
  • Five new security audit codes added to the system audit journal monitor
  • Reminder alerts added to the system disc space watch when disc space is at a dangerously high level

Optional Subject text added on Watch Task alerts.

At the request of a customer, we have added an optional Alert Subject Text parameter to the Watch Task feature. This will let you either use the default Subject Text for alerts or set a unique Subject Text for each Watch Task alert.

System History Log Watch option added.

An option has been added to the Watch Task feature (option 1 on the WATCH menu) that lets you set up a monitor for a message being posted to the System History Log (QHST). Some messages in the IBM i OS are only posted to the System History Log and this option will let customers receive an alert when they are posted.

Escalation alerts added to Message Queue Monitor.

The Message Queue Monitor has now been enhanced with an Escalation option. When a message that requires a response has not been answered after a period of time, in additional to the normal reminder message, you can now optionally add more notification addresses so that additional people are aware that a message needs to be dealt with.

New option for User Profile Watch.

At the request of a current customer, we have added a new parameter to the User Profile Watch. The new parameter it "Watch name" and it lets you control the job name of the watch when it is running. Prior to this change, the job name was the same as the user profile being watched making it obvious that the profile was being watched.

New options added to Job Queue Watch plus other enhancements.

The Job Queue Watch feature has been changed to allow watching multiple job queues with a single task. With this release, you can specify *ALL job queues in a given library or a GENERIC* set of job queues in a given library.

In addition, this release also adds IP Address reporting on the Audit Monitor alerts for command use (CD) and adds the job number to information reported when there is a CPU utilization alert to help pinpoint the specific job that is using CPU resources.

New options added to Output Queue Watch.

Two new options have been added to the output queue watch. You can now choose to include reports that are on hold when setting the alert threshold level. You can also choose to use a unique alert subject text for each output queue watch.

New Watch Task option added.

A new option has been added to the Watch Task feature. With this change, you can specify a character string in combination with a specific message ID. Prior to this change, the character string option was only available when watching *ALL messages.

New Job Watch option added.

A new option has been added to the Job Watch feature. When specified, the Job Watch will issue alerts when the watched job is put on hold.

Several updates implemented - see details.

The following changes have now been implemeted:

  • The system name is now included in the report heading for the Communications Monitor.
  • An option is added to the remote diagnostics collection to include a listing of a message queue.
  • When a message queue monitor starts, if the last message in the queue is alertable, an alert is NOT issued. This assumes that such an alert would be a duplicate of an alert previously sent.
  • An attachment format option has been added to the Audit Monitor. Currently implemented just for command line useage, it will let the customer opt for receiving the information in a comma-seperated-values file (*CSV).

New option added when working with task list.

A new option has been added when reviewing the list of tasks using option #1 on the MASTER menu. The new option (9=Log) will let you view current activity log records for the task selected.

Option added to Audit Monitor feature.

A new option for the Audit Monitor gives you control over what happens with an Audit Monitor starts. You can either start a fresh monitor (*RESTART) or you can have it pick up where it left off when the monitor was last running (*RESUME).

New "Open" option added to File Monitor feature.

The File Monitor feature has been enhanced to provide alerts whenever anyone accesses a registered file. The number of alerts is limited. When this option is used, none of the other monitoring options may also be used. This is for customers who just want to know when a file is accessed but not what specific operations were performed on the file.

Optional SIEM Feed added.

A new feature has been added that will optionally generate a SIEM Feed file in LEEF 2.0 format for your SIEM (Security Information Event Management) system. Current support will include all events from the message queue monitor funtion.

Connection Watch added.

A new feature called a Connection Watch has now been added to iEventMonitor. Using this feature, you can watch remote connections being made to your system and issue alerts when connections are seen that do not come from defined source IP addresses that you have created in the software. Using this feature, you can check for potentially malicious connections coming into your system.

SETALT command added.

A new command, SETALT, has been added to iEventMonitor. It allows you to temporarily switch the default notification addresses for alerts over to the alternate notification addresses. This can be very helpful under special circumstances when the normal shift change settings will not work.

Several enhancements added.

The following enhancements have been made to iEventMonitor:

  • A new IEM Test Message option has been added to the INSTALL menu. It will submit a job that will fail with an error message that needs a response. This can be used to test the new IEM Respond feature once it has been configured.
  • A new Text Friendly option has been added to the IEMSET variables that will cause certain alert messages to be formatted in a more friendly form for text destinations.
  • The message reminder time frame for message responses has been extended from a maximum of 60 minutes to 240 minutes.

Release 5 is now available at no charge to all customers that are current on annual maintenance support. Just send an email to Kisco and the new release will be made available. Please note that the new release will only work on systems with IBM's i/OS level of 7.1 or higher.

Release 4 updates:

User Profile Watch Enhanced.

The User Profile Watch function has been enhanced to let customers control when user profile watch alerts are issued. You can now issue alerts all the time, only when the occur during Prime Shift or only when they occur during Off-Prime Shift.

ASP % Watch Enhanced.

The ASP % Watch function has been enhanced to let customers watch disk space in any Auxiliary Storage Pool (ASP). Prior to this change, the ASP % Watch only looked at the system pool (ASP #1). Now, for customers with multiple pools, each pool can be monitored for available space.

Network Watch feature added.

A new watch function has been added to let you monitor network connections to your system that you depend on. The new watch feature will periodically validate that the network connection is in working order. If a network check fails, an alert will be issued.

New Job Watch Option.

The Job Watch function has a new option added. It will let you monitor for jobs that run longer than expected without issuing an alert whenever the job starts or ends.

New Email Subject Macro.

The message queue monitor feature supports customized email subject text. Several macro values were already supported, but we have now added the &JOBID macro. When used, the subject line will contain the job identifier information for the message that is issuing the message. This will be in the form of NNNNNN/UUUUUUUUUU/JJJJJJJJJ where N=Job Number, U=User Profile and J=Job Name. This can then be easily used in a WRKJOB command to work with the job that issued the message. Check the documentation that prints during upgrade install or PTF install processing for restrictions on how this macro should be used.

Option added to message queue monitor to show actual message date and time on the alert.

When a customer has systems running in different timezones, depending on the date and time stamp given to the email message can create confusion. We have now added an option on the message queue monitor to add the actual message date and time information to the alert text.

The fix for this problem is available as a PTF. This PTF can only be installed on a Release 4.08 version of iEventMonitor. The correction is available in PTF package IEPTF409. E-mail us and request the PTF package.


A time delay message queue monitor override has been added.

A new feature has been added to the message queue monitor overrides. You can now limit the number of alerts issued over a given time period for a specific message ID. This can cut down on alerts that are regularly issued by the IBM i OS but you don't need to keep reacting to.

Activity display changed.

The Display Activity Log (option #9 on the MASTER menu) has been changed. Prior to this change, the display defaulted to start with the oldest activity currently on file. After this change, the display will now default to the activity for the current date.

Lock-Wait Watch option added.

Some customers advised us that they are getting lock-wait alerts on jobs where it is not a serious issue and always resolves itself without intervention. We have now added an option to iEventMonitor that will allow customers to specify up to 20 jobnames that the lock-wait alert should ignore.

Alert Subject Text added to Job Watch function.

The Job Watch function (option #7 on the WATCH menu) now has the Alert Subject Text field added as an option. When the &JOBNO macro option is used in this context, a unique six character identifier will be assigned to help track repeat job watch alerts.

New email subject macro added.

A new email Alert Subject Text macro for the message queue monitor has been added. The &JOBNO will substitute the six digit job number of the job issuing the message when this is used. This can help with tracking messages, especially with reminder emails about unanswered messages.

With this change, the reminder email about unanswered messages will include the Alert Subject Text field complete with any macros that are in effect.

Optional header and trailer text added.

For all alerts issued by iEventMonitor, customers can now add optional header text and/or trailer text. When used, the additional standard text will be inserted at the start of the email body or at the end.

Reminder alerts differentiated.

iEventMonitor has an option to issue reminder alerts when error messages have not been resolved. Prior to this change, the reminder subject text appeared to be another new alert message. With this change, the subject text clearly indicates that the alert is a reminder.

New Email Subject Macro.

The message queue monitor feature supports customized email subject text. Several macro values were already supported, but we have now added the &SEV macro. When used, the system severity level of the message being alerted will be inserted into the email subject line.

New features available in Release 4.

Effective date: July 1, 2019

Release 4 of iEventMonitor includes the following enhancements:

  1. The message queue watch can now look for a specific text string in a message, regardless of message severity level (option 1 on the WATCH menu).
  2. The Audit Monitor now lets you capture specific commands executed by registered users. Lets you track exactly what a power user does when signed on to your system.
  3. All enhancements added during Release 3 life cycle rolled in.

Release 4 is now available at no charge to all customers that are current on annual maintenance support. Just send an email to Kisco and the new release will be made available. Please note that the new release will only work on systems with IBM's i/OS level of 7.1 or higher.

New option added to Job Watch feature.

Effective date: May 15, 2019

A new option has been added to the Job Watch feature. The new option is a "Run Time Check" value. When a watched job starts, this option will issue an alert if the job run time exceeds the number of minutes set for the "Run Time Check" value. This can be used to identify jobs that are taking a lot longer than expected.

Alert text improved for *LVLn ASP% watch feature.

Effective date: April 2, 2019

At the request of a current customer, we have added the monitored ASP% level to the alert text when a *LVL1 or *LVL2 ASP% watch alert is issued. Also included with this change, the Work With iEventMonitor Tasks display will always show the system name, date and time on the display for easy reference.

Activity Log added.

Effective date: October 26, 2018

A log has been added that records all alert activity processed by iEventMonitor. Each alert is logged with the full text of the alert, when it was issued and who it was sent to.

Lock Wait condition (LCKW) watch added.

Effective date: October 19, 2018

At the request of a customer, we have added a new watch function to issue alerts when job for a given user profile, or all profiles, goes into Lock Wait status (LCKW). The new feature includes a reminder loop to keep sending reminder alerts if the LCKW state is not resolved.

Advanced exit point option added to Watch Task.

Effective date: September 7, 2018

Prior to this change, the Watch Task only provided a 7 character field to the user exit program for customer use. With this change, there is now an advanced exit option available and the full 1024 character message information field is passed from the monitored message ID.

Output queue watch added.

Effective date: August 7, 2018

A new feature has been added that lets you watch an output queue for a buildup of unprocessed spool files in ready (RDY) status. When the number of ready spool files exceeds the threshold that you set, then an alert is issued. For customers who use output queues for additional processing, this can help detect issues with the process associated with the output queue.

Mutex Wait condition (MTXW) watch added.

Effective date: August 1, 2018

At the request of a customer, we have added a new watch function to issue alerts when a specific named job for a given user profile goes into Mutex Wait status (MTXW). The new feature also includes a reminder loop to keep sending reminder alerts if the MTXW state is not resolved.

Job Watch reminder added.

Effective date: May 14, 2018

For the Job Watch monitor, when you use the *STRSTP option to constantly watch for a job ending and restarting, you can now set a reminder parameter that will, after the specified interval of minutes, issue a reminder alert when the watched job has not resumed following a stop.

Several new options added.

At the request of different customers, the following new options have been added to iEventMonitor:

  1. A delete option has been added to the Work With iEventMonitor Tasks function (option 7 on the Master menu).
  2. A logging option has been added so that whenever iEventMonitor issues a successful alert, information about the alert is posted to the joblog and to the system history log.
  3. An option has been added to include job information on message queue monitor alerts.

Alternate off-shift default notification option added.

A new option has been added that lets you define an alternate off-shift default notification list so that different alert notification addresses can be used depending on when the alert events happen during the course of the day.

User Profile Watch feature added.

A watch function that issues alerts whenever a specific user profile signs on or off from an interactive session has been added to iEventMonitor. This feature will let you keep track of when specific users are logged into your system, especially remote programmers, contract programmers or users with broad security defined to their profile.

New features available in Release 3.

Effective date: March 1, 2018

Release 3 of iEventMonitor includes the following enhancements:

  1. All Monitor and Watch tasks are now logged and can be easily restarted using the stored parameters.
  2. Message queue monitor alert notification has been enhanced.
  3. All enhancements added during Release 2 life cycle rolled in.

Release 3 is now available at no charge to all customers that are current on annual maintenance support. Just send an email to Kisco and the new release will be made available. Please note that the new release will only work on systems with IBM's i/OS level of 6.1 or higher.

Exit Program option added to Watch Task.

The Watch Task process in iEventMonitor lets you set a watch for a specific message arriving at a given message queue. This is independent of the general message queue monitor process. This update adds an optional exit program to the watch task. Whenever the watch task is satisfied, iEventMonitor will call your exit program to do whatevern additional processing you might want to complete.

Utilization Monitor can now check for total system CPU utilization.

At the request of a current customer, the CPU Utilization Monitor function in iEventMonitor has been upgraded to also allow for customers to monitor total system CPU utilization. Until now, this was limited to watching a specific subsystem. Now, in addition to monitoring a specific subsystem, you can also start a monitor that will watch total system CPU utilitization.

Email parameter expanded to 200 characters.

At the request of a current customer, the EMAIL parameter field has been expanded from a 100 character field to a 200 character field. This change provides customers with lengthy domain names with more flexibility in creating notification lists for more end users.

New Job Watch option added.

A new option has been added to the Job Watch feature of iEventMonitor. The new *STRSTP option will monitor for a job (or jobs) to start or end. When the watch is satisfied, it will reset and stay active. This way, a job can be tracked when it starts and stops and then starts again.

Message Queue Monitor Improved.

The message queue monitor function in iEventMonitor has been re-engineered so that it no longer requires a lock on the message queue being monitored. This will allow customers to monitor the message queue manually, including removing old messages, while the iEventMonitor is active. It will also allow other application to have access to the message queue concurrent with iEventMonitor.

New features available in Release 2.

Release 2 of iEventMonitor includes the following enhancements:

  1. New security audit event monitors. Whenever a monitored security event occurs on your system, an alert will be issued by iEventMonitor with summary information about the event.
  2. Improved security controls to allow you to give access to iEventMonitor to user profiles that are not security officer level profiles.
  3. Watch tasks now support auto start capability.
  4. Customer alert processes now allow including an attachment file.

Monitor all jobs in an interactive subsystem for high CPU utilization.

High CPU utilization in an interactive subsystem can be an indication of a runaway job or a very poor choice of processing options. It is often the indicator of a problem. iEventMonitor now has a monitor that can be set to watch an interactive subsystem and report when a job exceeds a CPU utilization rate that you choose.

A new message queue override option has been added. With the new option, called "Combined" (code C), iEventMonitor will check both the Message overrides and Message Exception IDs before deciding to report and event.

Several specification changes implemented.

Based on customer feedback, the following specification changes have now been implemented in iEventMonitor:

  1. Up to 8 stacked notification addresses can now be included in a single event notification. The previous limit was 5.
  2. Watch Tasks now include the message detail text in their notification message.
  3. The text email process has been improved with easier to use debug features and error checking on SMTP server issues.

Job queue watch monitor added.

A new monitor feature has been added to keep an eye on job queues on your system. When you start this monitor for a specific job queue, iEventMonitor will periodically check the job queue for a threshold number of jobs waiting to run. If the threshold is exceeded, an event notification will be issued.

To help customers diagnose email delivery problems, especially on brand new installs, an optional diagnostic report of the email transmission process can be activated. This can help to pinpoint the exact configuration issue that is preventing email from getting sent.

User exit program call option added on message queue monitor function.

As of release 1.04 of iEventMonitor, an optional user exit program call has been added to the message queue monitor function. When a qualified message is received, the user program will be called passing a single parameter that contains details about the message that has been received. The feature includes the option to suppress the alert notification process if so desired.

Job watch function added.

A job watch function has now been added to iEventMonitor. Using this feature, you can send an alert when an active job ends or you can send an alert when a specific job starts on the system. Jobs can be specified by specific name or by using a GENERIC* reference. You can check for jobs under a specific user profile or you can select the job for *ALL user profiles.

Additional control over email identification fields.

As originally released, iEventMonitor used some standard values for the email sender's name and the email subject line. With this change, the customer can now set these globally on their system. This will help them to differentiate when there are multiple systems being monitored or if there are multiple partitions involved.
