New report added to SafeNet/400

Effective date: 05/20/2008 - Release 8.51

At the request of a customer, we have added a new report to SafeNet/400 that produces a list of the SafeNet/400 Administrators currently registered. There is also an optional feature that allows you to create this list in an *OUTFILE format for use in your own reporting systems.

This update is available via the Internet as a PTF package PCPTF851. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 8 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 8.51 or higher will have this specification change included.

Interim release 8.50 of SafeNet/400 now available

Effective date: 05/06/2008 - Release 8.50

An interim release level, Release 8.50, is now available for SafeNet/400. This release includes the following new features:

  1. The FTP Client exit program has been enhanced with new object level controls. This feature now supports a setting at level 4 so that you can control which objects FTP Client users are allowed to use on your System i during their FTP Client session.

  2. The FTP Client exit program has been enhanced with IP address controls. When the FTP Client is used at either level 3 or level 4, you can now control which IP addresses the FTP Client user is allowed to connect with.

  3. The email alert notification process for SafeNet/400 has been enhanced and simplified. You now will no longer need to maintain SMTP destination addresses in the System i directory. SafeNet/400 Release 8.50 lets you specify the destination email addresses directly. Also, the notification email message will now contain a summary of the violations that have occurred.

  4. SafeNet/400 release updates are now available to all current customer via a download option. Up to this point, release upgrades had to be processed from a source CD provided by Kisco Information Systems. With this new capability, Kisco will make an ISO CD image file available to current customers via download thereby eliminating delays due to shipping.

  5. Release 8.50 includes interim updates to all SafeNet/400 documentation. Check the SafeNet/400 Download page to get the latest versions of all documentation or just request copies from Kisco Information Systems by email request.

This update is available via the Internet as a PTF package PCPTF850. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. New option to exclude a specific exit point from SafeNet/400 processing

Effective date: 07/19/2007 - Release 8.11

At the request of a customer, we have added an option so that you can flag any exit point on the system to be excluded from SafeNet/400 processing when the product is activated and deactivated. Use of this option will open up a security exposure on your system, so we do not recommend that you use this without consulting first with Kisco support staff. Some customers, however, may find that their system requires that a specific exit program from SafeNet/400 be excluded on their system.

This update is available via the Internet as a PTF package PCPTF811. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Release 6 Updates:

History purge process improved.

Effective date: 10/14/2003

Many of our customers have very high network transaction traffic loads. Running the purge of the history file, which is needed to protect DASD utilization, was a problem for some of these customers. When the purge was run, the logging function was being shut down for the entire process. When a period of high network traffic ensued, the logging could automatically get restarted before the purge completed. With this change, the PTF process is improved to limit the amount of time that the logging function is halted and a variable is provided for the customer who wants to not stop recording transactions at any time during the purge.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF631. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 6 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 6.31 or higher will have this new feature included.

"Super Trusted User Profile" implemented for performance improvement.

Effective date: 06/20/2003

Several customers have contacted us over the years to express concern about overhead in the File Server (*FILESRV) function when SafeNet/400 is in use. This is especially evident for certain types of third party client/server applications where the client generates a high level of network traffic to the file server function. Such applications as external fax servers and mirroring software are just some examples where this has been a problem.

To address this situation and improve overall system performance when you have this kind of application running on your system, we have now implemented the concept of a "Super Trusted User". The Additional Documentation Topics that are available with the PTF describe how to implement this feature safely.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF627. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 6 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 6.27 or higher will have this new feature included.

Maintaining IBM-Supplied "Q" user profiles made easier.

Effective date: 06/13/2003

In earlier releases, SafeNet/400 only allowed the specific user profile QSECOFR to maintain access rules for the IBM-supplied user profiles that start with the letter "Q". This restriction has now been lifted at the request of several customers who do not permit, and rightly so, anyone to use that special profile. With this change, any user profile with *SECOFR or *SECADM special authority can now maintain the settings for every profile registered to SafeNet/400.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF626. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 6 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 6.26 or higher will have this new feature included. This PTF also includes a couple of minor bug fixes.

Historical Transaction Review options extended.

Effective date: 02/20/2003

SafeNet/400 collects network transaction information and allows you to review those transactions on-line. For many installations, however, the volume of network transactions is large and the history file must be purged periodically to conserve disk space. The purge procedure is already included on the SN2 menu. The new feature implemented at this time gives you the capability to review SafeNet/400 history transactions from files other than the regular production history file. Using this feature, you can restore backups or run inquiries directly against the SafeNet/400 archive file.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF622. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 6 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 6.22 or higher will have this new feature included. This PTF also includes a couple of minor bug fixes.

New option for DDM checking added.

Effective date: 12/06/2002

Based on a customer request, we have modified SafeNet/400's DDM authorization process to now, optionally, based the authorization on the source system name rather than on the user profile associated with the request. When SafeNet/400 is initially installed, the original user profile checking will be acitve. When the alternate checking is activated, the authorizations will be based on the remote system's system name rather than on the user profile.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF621. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 6 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 6.21 or higher will have this new feature included.

Support added for OS/400 version V5R2.

Effective date: 11/13/2002

Support for changes required for OS/400 release V5R2 have been added to SafeNet/400. All versions of the software starting with release 6.20 will now run under V5R2.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF620. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 6 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 6.20 or higher will have this new feature included.

Anonymous FTP GUEST password removed.

Effective date: 07/17/2002

The ability to use the password value of GUEST when logging on to an anonymous FTP session has been removed from SafeNet/400. We decided that the exposure with this ability was too great.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF617. Other minor fixes are also included in this PTF. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 6 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 6.17 or higher will have this new feature included.

Optional prompt added when activating SafeNet/400 from the menu.

Effective date: 07/02/2002

At the request of several customers, we have added a prompt to the SafeNet/400 activation process. With this change, a prompt is displayed when you activate SafeNet/400 from option #6 on the SN2 menu. The prompt will ask if you want to start logging. If you are activating SafeNet/400 while your system is in restricted mode, we recommend that you not start logging. If SafeNet/400 is properly installed on your system, logging will start when you resume normal processing when your startup program is activated.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF616. Other minor fixes are also included in this PTF. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 6 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 6.16 or higher will have this new feature included.

Significant performance improvement

Effective date: 03/19/2002

Several customers have contacted us recently with questions about performance on their systems when using SafeNet/400. To improve performance, we have made several engineering changes to the way network transactions are authorized. This change will mean a change in the way security authorization changes are recognized.

Up until this point, you could dynamically change SafeNet/400 from no authorization checking (level 1) to user-to-server checking (level 3) to user-to-object checking (level 4). These changes could be made at any time and SafeNet/400 would recognize the change immediately.

With this improvement, changes to server settings will only be recognized at the time when the client system disconnects from your system and then reconnects. This is true whether the server setting is made on a global basis (option #1 on the SN1 menu) or on an individual user basis (option #2 on the SN1 menu).

Based on a thorough review of the performance of SafeNet/400, we determined that the performance improvement realized by this change would be well worth the inconvenience of this operational difference.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF604. Other fixes and new features are also included in this PTF. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Instructions for installing the PTF will be provided along with the file. To request the PTF, click on the E-mail link at the start of this page. (Note: You must be current on all prior Release 6 PTFs before you can install this change.) New customers ordering Release 6.04 or higher will have this new feature included.

Customer's should be aware that this PTF requires a restricted state to be installed.

Improved settings maintenance

Effective date: 03/19/2002

A new feature has been added to the On-Line Transaction Testing capability in SafeNet/400. This testing capability, which has always been an integral part of SafeNet/400, has been enhanced with the ability to author new rules directly from the testing screen. Using this new tool, if a transaction has been rejected by SafeNet/400, you can immediately author a rule to accept the transaction by simply pressing a function key.

New commands added

Effective date: 03/19/2002

Several customers have integrated security maintenance functions of SafeNet/400 into their own adminsitrative support programming. To provide these customers with greater flexibility, we have now added several new command functions to SafeNet/400 that can be called from user programs via CL commands. These new commands provide the ability for user programs to do the following functions:

  • Add FTP commands authorization for one or more users
  • Add Path Name authorization for one or more users
  • Remove authorized CL commands for one or more users
  • Remove FTP command authorization for one or more users
  • Remove SQL statement authorization for one or more users
  • Remove user to server authorization for one or more users

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF604. Other fixes and new features are also included in this PTF. New peformance enhancement

Effective date: 11/26/2001

Some customers that have network applications with very high traffic requirements have reported intermitent performance logjams to us. To address this situation, we have modified the logging procedure to provide for additional logging agent programs to run concurrently.

This update is available via the Internet as a part of of PTF package PCPTF602. Registered customers of SafeNet/400 can obtain this PTF as an E-mail attached file by just requesting it from us. Profile Swapping Support Added

Effective date: 03/01/2000

User profile swapping allows you to control users differently when they are network users and when they are working from a terminal session. With user profile swapping active, when a request comes into SafeNet, all SafeNet security lookups (user to server, user to objects, etc.) are performed using the Original profile. Once the request passes SafeNet security checking, the Swap profile is assigned to the request and passed to OS/400 for security lookups. All OS/400 security lookups are performed using the "swapped" profile. SafeNet logging remains assigned to the original profile. All job attributes except security routines within OS/400 remain attached to the original profile.

User swapping is available from server level 1 and higher. Using the CHGSPCSET command (menu option #2 on the SN2 menu) you can specify whether swapping is *NO, *OPT (Optional) or *RQD (Required). When set to *NO, no swap profile is looked for or performed. When set to *OPT , a swap profile is used if it is set-up. When set to *RQD, a swap profile must be used; a request will reject if not set-up for original profile.

You setup a swap profile from the special setup menu (SN2) option #15. You enter the original profile, and then the profile to be swapped to. Once set up and activated, all requests for this original profile, will be assigned the swap profile.

You can print the swap profile file, using F6 within the swap profile maintenance screen, or from MENU SN3 option #9.

This way you can favor users who need priority and reduce resources allocated to users who are allocated too much resource at the expense of others on your system.

Effective date: 09/25/1999

This new feature gives you the ability to attach your own programs to each exit point used and controlled by SafeNet/400. Using this feature, you can easily implement additional security and processing controls that are unique to your AS/400 installation. When one of these optional Customer Exit Programs is defined to SafeNet/400, a call will be made to your program before any SafeNet/400 security checking is processed. The full character string provided by OS/400 is passed to your program for processing. Your program can return a rejection code to SafeNet/400 or you can return control to SafeNet/400 without logging an error. When the Customer Exit Program is finished processing, all SafeNet/400 security checks will be performed unless your program logs an error code.

This update is included in Release level 5.01 of SafeNet/400. Due to the complexity of the change, new install media must be ordered from Kisco Information Systems. Contact us via E-mail to obtain your new media.
